It’s just after two in the morning, or maybe it isn’t two yet. Almost. I pull into the parking lot at the gas station and go inside. I walk to the back to where they keep the bottled drinks and cases of beer. I can’t decide what I want to buy; it’s been so long since I’ve had soda. I quit drinking it a couple of months ago. I pick up a can of Diet Coke, it’s 79 cents and I almost don’t get it because I have a whole case of it sitting under my bed. I take the can to the register and set it on the counter.
